The US Mint has been authorized to mint and sell Half ounce Gold coins honoring the first spouse of US presidents. To correspond with the Presidential dollar coins that began circulation in 2007, Presidential first lady coins are also being issued.

Presidential Golden Dollar

Presidential dollars - not made of real gold

The presidential dollars have become popular with collectors and curious citizens. Presidential $1 coins are usually sold for one dollar at local banks at the time of their issue. Although golden in color, presidential dollars are not made of gold. Instead their golden metallic look comes from an alloy that is primarily copper.

Real gold for first lady coins

Unlike the presidential dollars, presidential 1^st ladies (or “First Spouse” coins, as the mint calls them) are made of gold. Not issued for circulation these genuine Gold Coins contain a half ounce of gold. First Spouse gold coins are legal tender with a face value of $10. These presidential wives coins are minted and sold in limited quantities by the US government.

The following presidential spouses are honored on these 2009 gold coins: AAnna Harrison, Letitia Tyler/Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk, and Margaret Taylor.

Four coins are issued each year. The front of the coins will feature an image of the first lady, and include the US mottos, such as “In God We Trust”, along with the date and mintmark.

The reverse of each coin will feature something about that spouse’s life along with the inscriptions:

Unusual design for 2009 First Spouse gold coin

2009 is an unusual year for the first spouse gold coins. When a president’s wife died while in office and that same president remarried while in office, his first spouse coin features both first ladies. The 2009 Letitia Tyler and Julia Tyler gold coin is the very first (1^st spouse) gold coin featuring two wives.
