Presidential First Spouse 2009 Gold Coins
First ladies honored in 2009
The US Mint has been authorized to mint and sell Half ounce Gold coins honoring the first spouse of US presidents. To correspond with the Presidential dollar coins that began circulation in 2007, Presidential first lady coins are also being issued.
Presidential dollars - not made of real gold
The presidential dollars have become
popular with collectors and curious citizens.
Presidential $1 coins are usually sold for one dollar at local
banks at the time of their issue.
Although golden in color, presidential dollars are not made of
gold.
Instead their golden
metallic look comes from an alloy that is primarily copper.
Real gold for first lady coins
The following
presidential spouses are honored on these 2009 gold coins:
AAnna Harrison, Letitia Tyler/Julia Tyler,
Sarah Polk, and Margaret Taylor.
Four coins are
issued each year.
The front
of the coins will feature an image of the first lady, and include the US
mottos, such as “In God We Trust”, along with the date and mintmark.
The reverse of each
coin will feature something about that spouse’s life along with the
inscriptions: $10 – face value ,
1/2 oz. - weight,
and
.9999 Fine Gold.
(Indicating a gold purity of 99.99% solid gold)
