The Lincoln Cent gets a new face in 2009In fact, the penny will get four new faces!
Yes . . a New Penny design is coming!It is official, United States Mint will issue four special one-cent coins in 2009 to celebrate the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. These special circulating commemorative Lincoln cents will also celebrate the longest running coin design that the US has every had, the 100th anniversary of the production of the Lincoln cent. The front of the Lincoln cent has virtually remained the same since 1909. Each of these four Lincoln cents will continue to feature President Abraham Lincoln. The reverse of each coin will have one of four different designs highlighting a different aspect of Abraham Lincoln's life. What the new Cents Will Be LikePublic Law # 109-145 authorizes the production of these commemorative (one year only) coins and specifies the themes for the reverse of the coins. A new 2009 cent will be issued about every 3 months during 2009. The themes for the coins are as follows:

2009 Lincoln One-cent Redesign Program The Secretary of the Treasury will choose the specific design from those designs suggested by the Citizen's Coinage Advisory Committee and the /span> Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. The one cent coins will retain the same metallic content as the 2008 cents, a core of Zinc with an outer layer of 2.5% Copper.
These 2009 Abraham Lincoln coins will be released into general circulation, so that all citizens will have a opportunity to buy them from their bank and join in this special celebration. In addition, the US Mint is given permission to mint and sell special collector version one-cent coins during 2009. Numismatic versions may include special varieties, such as a solid 95% copper alloy similar to the first Lincoln Cents issued in 1909.Expect both proof and uncirculated versions of these special collector coins to be available for purchase from the US Mint. Collectors may also buy 2009 Lincoln cents from other outlets such as their local coin dealers, or internet coin shops. 2010 Penny Design to change, too! When 2009 is over, the US Mint is no longer permitted to make these 2009 Lincoln One-cent commemorative designs. Instead a new one-cent coin design for 2010 (and beyond) will be released. Legislation instructs the Secretary of Treasury to come up with a reverse design "that will be emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country".
